Blue Star Families Weekly News Round-Up

All the Latest in Everything Blue Star Families

I hope your 4th of July weekend was filled with family, friends and a little good old fashioned patriotism.  We were all thankful for the reminder of just how important military service is to our great country and how essential strong military families are to sustainable military service.

To help make connecting together even easier and more exiting, we are busy creating a new Blue Star Families website and on-line community that we expect to launch later this month.  Check out how you can help below!

Remember, if you want your info and links to articles and events more often than once a week with our Weekly News & Info Roundup, join is on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and check out our Blue Star Families Blog

There’s a lot of excitement about Blue Star Families and the best way to make sure you are in the middle of it all is to join your local chapter.  Just shoot Vivian a note at members@bluestarfam.org and she’ll get you connected.

Enjoy! Heidi & the Blue Star Families Team

Help BSF Gold Star Mom Win the Energizer Hall Of Fame Contest

When Dee Mills’ son, Marine Sgt. Lea Mills was killed in action in Iraq in 2006,  Dee knew that her son would not want his brothers and sisters in arms forgotten.  In lieu of flowers she requested friends and family to send money to her new organization “Lea’s Prayers and Postage.”  As of today, she has raised over $100,000.00 for postage for packages for our troops.

Read more about Dee’s amazing story and how to vote for her to become Energizer Hall of Fame on our blog.

Couple of Great 4th of July Articles

We wanted to share two great pieces we saw this weekend centering around the patriotism of the 4th of July holiday.  The first, from CNN, focused on all the terrific work the USO does for our troops and their recent coup with Steven Colbert’s trip to Afghanistan.  Check out the story here.

The second, a beautifully written op-ed, A Soldier’s Wife by Georgie Hanlin, appeared in The Washington Post on Independence Day.  It’s about love, honor and military service ~ perfect for the holiday.
